Foundational Training in Dialogue Therapy and Real Dialogue: Session 2 of 4 (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)

  • Concordia University | Department of Creative Arts Therapies VA 264 1395 Boulevard René-Lévesque Ouest Montréal, QC, H3G 2M5 Canada (map)

Session #2 of 4
Taught by Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D. & co-therapist

Course Description:

No matter how much or little experience you have with couples therapy, applying Dialogue Therapy and Real Dialogue to your work will enhance your skills in helping couples maintain the emotional space to see/hear/feel each other with greater intimacy and accuracy, enhancing problem-solving and resolving breaks in trust.

Become a nationally certified Dialogue Therapist or Real Dialogue Specialist in this structured, time-limited method that draws on psychoanalysis, mindfulness, and psychodrama. Dialogue Therapy and Real Dialogue can be applied with couples in conflict, as well as with any other dyadic relationships in conflict. This innovative model also can be used to defuse and resolve social or cultural conflicts between equals, in which the ideals of mutuality and reciprocity offer special challenges.

Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D. speaks directly about the ways in which loving well can heal individuals, as well as families, by valuing our differences as a means to greater intimacy. She believes that the greatest challenges today come from our desire for equality, mutuality, and witnessing in our close relationships. Effective psychotherapy with couples allows for the development of a mindful space in which individuals learn to speak for themselves and to listen and respond to each other with tolerance and curiosity. Too many people unnecessarily lose precious relationships because they do not have the skills of dialogue and witnessing. These skills support the individuals’ subjectivity in claiming their own experience of the relationship as well as taking responsibility for their contributions to the relationship dynamics. When we understand our personal development, we understand that we are challenging each other in ways that can promote self-understanding and mutual growth. It is within this space of truthful conversation with ourselves and others that rupture and repair operate. This has been Dr. Young-Eisendrath's life work.

These four sessions of training are designed to offer 22.5 CEs per session, introducing participants to the history, theory, and method of Dialogue Therapy and Real Dialogue. All sessions will be taught by Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D.; sessions two and four will be taught by Polly and a co-therapist. The first session (February 27-March 1) is an overview that sets the conceptual framework and rationale of this method. The second session (September 17-20, 2020) provides an overview of the original co-therapist model of Dialogue Therapy with live demonstrations of key components of the initial stages of therapy. The third session (November 12-15, exact date pending) will be an opportunity for participants to begin to practice and to work with each other in developing their knowledge and skills. It will also introduce the solo model and its methods. The fourth and final session (exact date pending) will offer further opportunity to apply the methods and skills and to practice the techniques of doubling, coaching, and role reversal interviews.

This training provides an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of Dialogue Therapy with active skills training in the core competencies of this approach. Each session will include theory, observations of videotaped and live demonstrations, in vivo skills training, and mindfulness practices that can be taught to couples and integrated into one’s therapeutic practice. Completion of the training qualifies you to get certified as a Dialogue Therapist or to become a Real Dialogue Specialist - with the addition of some supervisory consultation hours.

Feedback from past training sessions:

“This was an overall excellent training, well done, well presented, and valuable. I find this information immediately useful as well as providing the opportunity for lots of future growth in my personal satisfaction and ability to help others.”

“Transformative. I feel the shifts in my perceptions in a personal, relational and global way. I gained an understanding of the humiliation-rage cycle and the power of empathy and curiosity to alter that cycle in substantive ways and in a relatively short period of time.”

“Excellent training and subject matter; most helpful I’ve encountered in over 25 years of practice.”
